We have done research at four different levels Federal, State, County and an International Airport. The following is a brief description of the savings:

Federal:
GSB-88 (fog seal) will extend the life of a new asphalt pavement 3.5 years. The cost of GSB-88 is $0.18 per year for those 3.5 years or the asphalt cost would be $0.31 if no preventive maintenance had been done. The cost savings for 1 mile of road per year would be $1,800 for the 3.5 years that the GSB-88 was extending the life of the overlay.

State:
In this case the costs were similar only the time was 4 years. This makes the savings $2,100 for the 4 years of extra life that the GSB-88 gave the asphalt overlay.

County:
Because the overlay was of an inadequate design to start with the extra life was 3.5 years and the savings was closer to $1800.

International Airport:
The results of these projects varied between 3 and 5 years. If we use the conservative time of 3 years the yearly saving is $2,900 because the higher standards required.
